TTI Travel is graced with friends in sunny places.
In January 2015, we were hosted by Delta Airlines and Grand Velas Resort Riviera Maya for four days of ultra-luxury beachside living.
A group of 15 TTI Travel Advisors and Directors from across the country gathered at Pearson Airport in their brightest tropical colours, white linens, and straw hats. Destination – Riviera Maya, Mexico.
It was an easy few hours of flying with a connection in Atlanta, Georgia. Personally accompanying us on our entire getaway was Delta’s José Durdos, Global Sales Executive and customer service phenomenon.
As we landed in Cancun, the pilot announced the local temperature of 25°C. Delightful!
The TTI group was greeted warmly by International Incentive Travel (IIT), our local partners in high-touch tours and transportation. IIT transferred us in comfort and style to the stately white gates of the Grand Velas Resort.
It’s hard to dazzle a group of Virtuoso advisors who have stayed in many of the most magnificent hotels worldwide, but the Grand Velas stood out on a new level.
Our cars pulled up the long palm-lined driveway to Grand Class, the hotel’s adult-only section. All our senses were tingled at once – the sea breeze blowing through the airy front entrance that opened onto the beach, blue surf crashing on the sand, the sultry heat of the Mexican sun, exotic flowers displaying their blooms…
Welcome cocktails in hand, we were escorted to our suites. Each room in Grand Class has sweeping views of the ocean for which this part of Mexico is famous. Most of us slid straight into our private plunge pools to sip tequila and bask in the afternoon light.
The next few days were a succession of dreamlike activities. Some people went zip-lining and cave swimming, others explored nearby Playa del Carmen. We swam in the ocean and the infinity pools or lounged on the beach. The Grand Velas provided catamarans and paragliding equipment for the more adventurous guests.
It was also hard to resist the pull of our suites. The wide lounge beds on our balconies provided a private spot for sun worshipers during the day, and the spacious sitting areas inside could seat several friends for an aperitif before dinner.
At night, we congregated in the jazz and karaoke bars for some live music and dancing.
The resort is designed to provide its guests with numerous “secret” spots to hide away and relax. The Zen section, for example, is a quick shuttle ride into the Grand Velas’ lush jungle. If we looked closely, we could see a variety of local wildlife hidden in the trees.
Most members of our group chose to indulge in a visit to the Maya Spa, named “Best Spa in the World” by Virtuoso in 2010. After a highly skilled massage, guests could continue into the hydrotherapy circuit, including a clay bath and experience pool.
The Grand Velas has turned typical all-inclusive dining on its head. Each of their restaurants is superb. Guests can enjoy several gastronomic options, such as the French Piaf and Mexican Frida, both boasting a Four-Diamond Award, and the molecular Cocina de Autor, a Five-Diamond experience run by Mexico’s top chefs, Bruno Oteiza, Mikel Alonso, and Xavier Pérez Stone. It has been named to Restaurant Magazine’s Top 100 in the World three times in recent years.
Even the buffet was excellent. Azul, the family-friendly self-serve option, had a delicious spread of beautifully presented individual dishes. Waiters were never more than a few feet away, eager to serve.
On our last morning, a few people woke early to witness the sun rise above the Gulf of Mexico. After a leisurely outdoor breakfast and a final walk along the sand, we said our goodbyes and returned to the airport. The Grand Velas Riviera Maya captured our hearts and we can’t wait to send you there to experience it yourselves.
