The Inside Scoop: Adventure on the Sea of Cortez

Interview with Susan Foster, Away by TTI Travel Advisor

Away: What was the purpose of your trip?

Last year my partner and I went whale watching on the east coast and wanted to do the same on the west in warmer waters. We chose an UnCruise because of the ship size and the itinerary. We prefer the intimacy of smaller cruises and the Safari Endeavour is a cosy 84-passenger expedition ship.

It was also a chance to get away and try something unique. Mexico’s Baha California peninsula is a haven for all kinds of wildlife, and what differentiates UnCruise is the emphasis they place on discovering the local nature.

A: Tell us about your itinerary.

The Safari Endeavour sailed up the Sea of Cortez from San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico to Loreto with a stop in La Paz. It’s a 7-day journey. Aside from the port visits, days are spent along the coast stopping in coves and on islands to see whales, dolphins, sea lions and swim with whale sharks.

We had excellent opportunities for snorkelling and strolling the beautiful white sand beaches.

Other activities included kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and diving off the ship on hot evenings. When we just wanted to relax, we enjoyed stretching classes and the spa in the morning, and the wine bar and craft beer selection in the evening.

The ship price included all meals, premium drinks, fine wines and beers, as well as one excellent massage.

A: Most memorable moment?

There were so many! We never knew what we were going to experience next. One day a school of dolphins swam alongside the ship, jumping and diving for hours. Once it got dark you could see thousands of fish swimming near the boat. Another day I got to ride a donkey. At night, stargazing was a popular and peaceful activity from the top deck.

A: What surprised you most about the trip?

I didn’t realise how much I would enjoy an expedition cruise! The suites were very comfortable, the food was exceptional and fresh, the staff were friendly and interesting, and the activities very well planned. It was an inspiring alternative to an all-inclusive resort, because we got to discover so much while still benefitting from Mexico’s fabulous climate.

It’s also a really versatile vacation – there really is no age limit for this type of adventure, and there were lots of active seniors on board.

We’re already planning to return this year, for the Snake River UnCruise, and in 2016 in Costa Rica! I can’t recommend it enough!
